Parks & Beachs

Niigata City has many beautiful parks and beaches. Click on the map to explore the city's parks and peaches, then scroll down for a detailed description for a few nice parks to check out.

Hakusan Park
This is one of the first parks in Japan to be designated as a city park in 1873. The black pine trees blend harmoniously with the azaleas around the pond, and there are many historical monuments within the park grounds, which are landscaped in the Dutch style.
There are also six "elevated gardens" built six meters above the ground next to the Niigata City Performing Arts Center. Using the bridges you can visit all the facilities and walk all the way to the Shinano Riverside Promenade.

A 15 minute walk from Furumachi.
A 3 minute walk from the "Shiyakusho Mae" bus stop.

Enkikan
This historical building was part of a well-known merchant family's residence in the Meiji era (1868-1912) that was moved and reconstructed in Hakusan Park. The inner parlor, reception rooms, the master's private rooms and tea ceremony rooms can be used for traditional cultural activities. General admission to view the Enkikan is free of charge. You can also enjoy green tea with sweets for 300 yen.

Closed: 1st and 3rd Monday (Tuesday when Monday is a holiday) Dec. 29 - Jan. 3
Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. (admission is until 5:00 p.m.)

Tenjuen Park
This park's distinctive character comes from its combination of colorful Chinese-style gardens and refined Japanese-style gardens. Throughout the year, you can enjoy the park's various flowering plants. The park's main building has a Great Hall, tea rooms, and a regular hall which can be rented out to hold events (fee applicable). In addition, on the third Sunday of every month, a concert which is open to the public is held at Tenjuen Park.

Location: "Tenjuen Mae" bus stop.
Closed: The 2nd and 4th Monday of every month. When Monday is a holiday, the park will be open on that day and closed on the following day (Tuesday). Also closed from December 29 - January 3.
Hours: From September to June : 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Sakata Lagoon Park
This is the tenth wetland in Japan registered as a Ramsar Convention site. It is located inside the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park, and is home to migratory birds like swans and bean geese, and such water plants as the prickly water lily. The area is particularly beautiful in summer when over 6,000 irises come into bloom.
* The Ramsar Convention is an international convention for the preservation of wetlands. It plays a particularly important role in the protection of waterfowl habitats.

Sakata Waterfowl & Wetlands Center
The nation's 4th "Waterfowl and Wetland Center" is located on a Ramsar Convention Registered Wetland. This center is a facility that many people can easily visit and come to appreciate the splendidness and importance of nature through the viewing of Sakata Lagoon.

Closed: Mondays (Tuesday when Monday is a holiday) Dec. 29 - Jan. 3
Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Fee: Admission is free.

Junsaiike Park
This park features a rare sand-dune lagoon surrounded by a red pine forest and borders the "firefly village." It is a place where you can get in touch with nature.

Location: A 3-minute walk from "Yuraku Icchome" bus stop.

Terao Chuo Park
Although this park commands a beautiful view of the Sea of Japan, it is also a place where you can enjoy the green shade of pines and the singing of birds. In the spring, the many tulips that bloom here make the park very colorful.

West Coast Park
This park is part of a forest reserve that stretches along the sea coast. It features a forest of wild birds, Don Hill, a central square, a playground, and a cycling road.
Location: Chuo Ward, on the coast from Sekiya Bunsui to the mouth of the Shinano River. (The whole coast of Niigata-jima Island) A 3 minute walk from "Matsunami-chō Sanchōme" bus stop.

Nishi Ohata Park
This park captures the feeling of Niigata in the old days when it was crisscrossed by moats lined with willows. In addition, it has a playground designed to conjure up images of waves.
Location: 5191 Nishi Ohata-cho, Chuo Ward
Take the bus bound for Niigatashi Bijutsukan and get off at "Shi Bijutsukan Mae." The park is a 1-minute walk from the bus stop.

Shinano Riverside Promenade
This is a green water-front park on both banks of the Shinano River. The road running through the park is lined with willows and cherry trees that were planted in 1989 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Niigata's incorporation as a city. These trees bring the riverside area to life.
Location: Chou Ward. Extends from Chitose Bridge to Bandai Bridge, and from the Kamitokoro Nichome area to Bandai Bridge

Toyano Traffic Park
This park is located near the Toyano Baseball Field. Families can enjoy go-carts, a playground, and an old steam locomotive which is on display.

Get off at "Kōnan Kōkō Mae" bus stop.
Go-carts are available every Fri., Sat., Sun. and holidays from the 2nd Fri. in March - 3rd Sun. in Nov.
(Open everyday from July 25 to Aug. 31)
Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Fee: one-seat go-cart ¥100 per cart
two-seat go-cart ¥150 per cart

Aoyama Water Park
This is a landscape garden with an incredible arrangement of small waterfalls, ponds, and rivers. It is a park where you can discover anew the natural beauty of water.
Location: 1-1 Aoyama Suido, Nishi Ward
A 1-minute walk from "Aoyama Suido Yuen Mae" bus stop.

Yamanoshita Beach Park
This beautiful park faces the area of the Sea of Japan Coast near the Niigata Airport. It features a lawn-covered square surrounded by greenery. The artificial wave swimming pool is very popular among children during the summer.

Miyanomori/Kibajo Park
Experience the world's history while playing in this park with a playground area constructed to resemble a castle during the age of civil wars and built by a warrior, Kagekatsu Uesugi.

Prefectural Toyanogata Park
This park is being constructed to be a large-scale park incorporating Toyano Lagoon and covering 287.4 hectares. It has a celebrated Snow Camelia garden, a Japanese-style garden, a brook that captures the feeling of a mountain valley, a small wooded area called the "Torimu no Mori," the Sports Park where the Big Swan Stadium is located, etc.

Akiha Park
This park, located in the Akiha hills, is famous for being a meeting point for nature lovers. Several recreation facilities are available inside the park.

Fukushimagata Wetlands
Discover the rich natural environment of the vast Fukushima wetlands, along with some exhibits about the Fukushima lagoon, an observation deck and a heated pool.
Location: Mae Shinden Otsu 493, Kita Ward

Uwasekigata Park
Enjoy the sublime scenery and beautiful flora of the vast Uwasekigata Park through the four seasons. Picnic and hiking areas also available.
Location: 1 Matsuno-o, Nishikan Ward
