Pets

Depending on where you live, you may not be allowed to have any pets. Contact the owner of your building to see if pets are allowed. If you do own a pet, be sure to read the important information below.

Rabies Shots
If you own a dog over the age of 90 days, you must have it inoculated against rabies once a year. If the shot is given at a veterinary clinic, it will cost about 3,100 yen. (Additional examination fees may also be charged.)

There will be an announcement of the schedule for the annual preventive inoculation service offered in April in the March issue of the "City Bulletin" (Shiho Niigata). A schedule in Japanese can also be found online. Contact the Niigata City Health and Hygiene Division at 025-228-1000 (Ext. 31521) for more information.

Registering Your Dog
If you own a dog over the age of 90 days, you must register it for life at a veterinary clinic or at one of the locations where rabies shots are given. Registration may cost 3,000 yen. When you move, your dog's residence changes, or your dog dies, please register the change.

If Your Dog is Missing
If your dog is missing, look for it by yourself and contact the Ward Residential Affairs and Services Division of your ward office immediately. Remember that if your dog has a collar, it can be easily identified. Lost dogs may be kept at the Public Health and Sanitation Center, so contact them, too.

If You Are No Longer Able to Keep Your Dog or Cat
Your pet should be treated as a member of your family all its life. If due to unavoidable circumstances, you are no longer able to keep your dog or cat, be responsible and try to find someone who can keep it. If you can not find anyone, contact the Ward Residential Affairs and Services Division of your ward office

Stray Cats
To report feral or abandoned cats, contact the Ward Residential Affairs and Services Division of your ward office.

If Your Dog or Cat Dies
When your pet dies, you must dispose of it properly. For details please contact the Ward Residential Affairs and Services Division of your ward office.

Exotic Pets
If you own an exotic and potentially dangerous animal (tigers, monkeys, alligators, pit vipers, boa constrictors, etc.), you must register it and apply for an ownership license. The application fee is 25,000 yen. Contact the Niigata City Health and Hygiene Division at 025-228-1000 (Ext. 31521) for more information.

For Pet-related Advice
If you have any questions or concerns about your pet, feel free to contact the Niigata City Health and Hygiene Division at 025-228-1000 (Ext. 31521) for advice. For health matters, please contact an animal hospital or veterinarian.
