Post Office Services

The mark is the symbol of the post office. On maps, it is used to indicate the location of post offices. It is also displayed in stores (like cigarette shops and convenience stores) that sell postage stamps and postcards issued by the post office.

You may send your stamped mail by simply putting the items into the square shaped red mailboxes located throughout the city. These mailboxes are marked with the familiar postal symbol and the word "POST."

Post offices, except the larger ones, are closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Items that are 14 - 23.5 cm in length, 9 - 12 cm in width, up to 1 cm in thickness, and up to 50 g in weight. The minimum postal rate is 80 yen (items up to 25g).

Items that are larger than this can be mailed as a package.

Postcards

If you buy a postcard issued by the post office with printed postage (50 yen), no stamp is necessary to send it. However, privately issued postcards will require a 50 yen stamp to mail.

Ordinary Postal Parcels (yu-pakku)
You may send ordinary postal parcels to any destination in Japan if they have a combined length + width + thickness of 170 cm or less, and weigh 30 kg or less. The rate will depend on the size and destination of the package. You can send a package of up to about 25 kg anywhere within Japan in two days. Charges and available destinations will differ depending on the company you use. If you are planning to send an expensive item (worth 300,000 yen or more), it is advisable to send the item from a post office using the registered parcel service. Items sent as registered parcels from the post office are insurable up to 5,000,000 yen.

Special Domestic Mail Services
When using special mail services (like express mail, registered mail, etc.) please add the rate for the special mail service to the normal rate.

Express Mail:
If you want your mail to arrive at its destination quickly, please send it by express mail. It will be given priority in transport and delivery.
e.g. Standard-sized items up to 250 g delivered by express mail will cost an extra 270 yen.
Registered Mail:
With registered mail, the entire course of the delivery of the mailed item is recorded from its acceptance at the counter to its delivery at its destination. Please bring items you wish sent by registered mail to the post office counter. In the event that registered mail is lost or damaged in the course of delivery, you may claim compensation for the amount of actual damage (up to the claimable amount of compensation you requested when originally sending the item). The upper limit of claimable compensation is 500,000 yen in the case of cash (Japanese yen) and 5,000,000 yen in the case of items other than cash.
When sending cash, please be sure to use cash registration envelopes (genkin kakitome futo) which can be purchased at the post office for 20 yen.

Banking at the Post Office
How to Open an Account
In Japan you can open a postal savings account at a post office. You may open an account in a method similar to that of banks and have your public utility bills paid automatically from your postal account.

Money transfers
Money transfers can be made from post offices. Ask about transfer charges and necessary documents at a post office that offers this service.

International Money Transfers

Remittance to the Receiving Party's Address:
Larger post offices offer postal money orders. The post office will airmail this certificate of payment to the overseas party. With the exception of a few countries, a short message may be sent along with this remittance. The receiver may then redeem the money order for cash at a post office.

Remittance to the Receiving Party's Account:
It is possible to send money to accounts mainly in Europe and America. This method of remittance has lower service charges than the postal money order method, and, as in the case of the postal money order method, it is possible to send a short message along with the money transfer. Please get details at a post office counter.

Urgent Money Transfers
Urgent money transfers may be made by telegraph to either the receiving party's address or the receiving party's account. Please note that this service is not provided to some countries.

Domestic Money Transfers

You can send cash by registered mail within Japan (see above). Or you can use one of the methods below.

Postal Money Orders (yubin kawase)
You may pay for postal money orders (yubin kawase) at post offices and send the certificate of payment to the receiving party by mail. When remitting small amounts of money, a special money order for small, fixed rate sums called teigakukogawase, which is cheaper than regular money orders, is also available.

Remittance to Postal Accounts
If the receiving party has a postal account, it is possible to remit money directly to the account. Although the accompanying charges are lower than other methods, it will take several days for the transfer to go through. Moreover, if both the sender and receiving party have a postal savings account (called Palulu), it is possible to transfer money instantly by ATM.
